But 9/11 wasn’t about statistics. It was about people. Souls lost, lives impacted, and families destroyed. Each victim was dear to someone. Fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, and close friends. Time has passed, people have done their best to pick up the pieces, but wounds will never fully heal.
Islamic terrorists displayed to the world what is wrong with humanity at 8:46 AM on September 11, 2001. Americans responded and affirmed what is truly right. Evil men might have stolen our innocence that morning, but Americans nationwide banded together. Out of the ashes emerged a renewed patriotism which had been missing for quite some time. We wept together, prayed for one another, and found common ground as one nation.
For all our differences we share a unique bond. Deep down most of us want the same things. Our founding fathers got it right. We yearn for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
The events of 9/11 continue to shape our lives, steer our nation’s future, and even affect the health of those in NYC. First responders, rescue workers, recovery personal, and countless others who worked or lived near the WTC complex continue to live with the repercussions. Respiratory ailments, cancers and other ailments plague far too many.
These are men and women who selflessly rushed into harm’s way to simply help others. They paid a heavy cost for those valiant actions. We owe them gratitude, but more importantly they need our unwavering support as they struggle with their health issues. Their bravery on 9/11 showed the whole world what is truly right with America.
Americans are great not because of the flag we fly, the wealth we amass, or even the ideals we proclaim. America is great because of the actions we manifest towards one another.
Today let us remember those who paid the ultimate price, and support those who bear the scars and lingering effects of 9/11. We will never EVER forget.
